Children's literature in Bangladesh has crossed its initial stage and attained the intellectual as well as artistic perfection, opined the speakers at the ceremony of Uro Children's Literature 2003 held on May 31 at the Liberation War Museum. Professor Anisuzzaman, children's writer Ali Imam, popular novelist Imdadul Haque Milon and Harunur Rashid of Globe Soft-drinks were talking at the event that honoured three eminent writers--Rabeya Khatun, Humayun Ahmed and Selina Hossain--with the award for this year.Bangladesh Shishu Shahitya Shangstha (BSSS), in association with Urocola, a soft-drink, confers this award for the three best books published in that year's Ekushey Book Fair. Besides the award, every year BSSS will hold a number of seminars on children's literature, publication ceremony of books for children and other activities that will promote endeavour writing for children. The awardees for this year, Rabeya Khatun, Humayun Ahmed and Selina Hossain--all are very popular among the younger readers. Rabeya Khatun was given the award for her book Shukhi Rajar Galpo (The Story of the Happy King). She has written the book in her usual easy language incorporating a new style. Above all, the book contains all those old fairytales told anew. Humayun Ahmed needs no description as regards his writing. He is perhaps the only writer the country has ever produced who holds attention of his readers and audience to the fullest extent. And he is popular not just among the teen-agers and youths, but among children and the elderly also. His Pipli Begum, Botol Bhut have immensely amused readers of all age groups. Selina Hossain is another writer gifted with the ease of language and intellectual presentation of the subjects. She, however, has not written much for the kids, only a couple or two. But those very few are enough to show off her capacity in understanding the child psychology. Her Mayorer Gari is such a book.
