DU student stabbed by hawkers

A student of Dhaka University was seriously injured when some hawkers stabbed and beat him up in front of BIRDEM Hospital at Shahbagh yesterday.

The victim was identified as Mohammad Abdul Halim, a fourth year student of law department.

Sources said he was also assaulted by the same group of hawkers the previous day as he protested their teasing of a poor woman asking for help from the pedestrians.

A resident student of Jasimuddin Hall, Halim is also a worker of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). He is now undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Later, Ramna police arrested three hawkers from the area.

On Sunday, Halim was waiting for bus in front of the BIRDEM Hospital when he saw some hawkers teasing the woman.

As he told the hawkers not to do so, they made an attack on him.

Yesterday, Halim along with his five friends came to the spot and were looking for the hawkers.

But the hawkers again made an attack on him, calling him a mugger.

He was rescued by his friends who took him to the DMCH.

No case was filed in this connection.
