Syed Jahangir -prolific at 70

Syed Jahangir who is now about 70 years old is still vibrant and spontaneous in his creations proved by the fact that his solo exhibition at Saju Art Gallery will be held from October 4 to October 16.

He deals with simple things such as the trees, clouds, birds, the rain and the annual floods and cyclones. He has chosen blue and golden yellow to play on his canvases. The blue goes in for his sky while the yellow is for his paddy fields and through them he brings in the joys of life. The blue and yellow also stand for pain and joy. His captivating compositions include farmers with their load of paddy under the blue sky. There is too the yellow boat in the blue water and the numerous mother and child themes. He has moved away from his abstract impressionism to the objective figurative life.

Jahangir says, "I have alternated between the figurative and abstract forms and sometimes a combination of both within distinct thematic compositions. Irrespective of the forms, the overriding objective has been to depict ordinary people, men and women, in their daily struggle for existence and moments of camaraderie. Life and nature depicted are seen in colours that encapsulate the appearance and spirit of Sonar Bangla. Even when used in abstraction, the colours vibrate with the rhythm of six seasons and the pattern of life that unfolds harmoniously within them. At the end, all my works are intimate play with colours."

During his 22 years as a professional artist, Jahangir has been prolific in producing water colours, oils and drawings. He has participated in more than 80 national and international group and individual exhibitions in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, Japan, Germany, USA, Kuwait, Russia, and Bangladesh. His contribution to the Shilpakala Academy won him the Ekushey Padak in 1985. His current show at the Saju Art Gallery is his 33 solo exhibition.
