UP member gunned down in Bagerhat

A Union Parishad member was gunned down, reportedly by the members of an extremist group, at Mayakhali village in Fakirhat upazila on Thursday night.The victim was identified as Liton Sarkar, 30, member of Ward No. 7 of Mulghar union parishad. Police said a gang of extremists fired on Liton at about 11.00pm when he along with one Bimal Bairagi was going to a neighbour's house. Liton died on the spot. Police recovered two cartridges from the spot and detained Bimal for interrogation. Family sources blamed an extremist group for the killing, saying that the group had long been demanding Tk 1,00,000 in protection money from Liton. With the killing of Liton, two UP chairmen and two members were killed in the district in last five months.
