Karnaphuli Bridge

The experience of travelling over the "steel wooden bridge," led me to write in the DS on 26 December, 1999 ("Dilapidated Karnaphuli bridge deck"). Others too wrote in the leading dailies (Prothom Alo, titled "Karnaphuli Sethur Durabastha", Feb 2 and "Karnaphuli Sethur Sanskar Karoon", 21 April, 2000).

Utopian projects of tunnel etc. below the Karnaphuli's bed were big promises, but nothing was done until last year when news of ECNEC approval came in electronic and print media. People hoped that the prime minister would lay foundation of a pucca Karnaphuli bridge by December, 2003. Recently, the PM laid foundation of Zia Memorial Complex. She mentioned about building a proper bridge over Karnaphuli, but did not disclose when it would happen and where. Strong rumour floats in the press that a minister wants to have it near Kalurghat Bridge, though that is not the popular demand. The government should immediately look into the matter.
