Grenade Attack
AL asks govt to name the 'country'
Staff Correspondent
The main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday asked the government to 'find out and make it public' which country or external force is involved in the August 21 grenade attacks on Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina, as the judicial inquiry commission on the grisly incident claimed."It is the responsibility of the government to find out and make it public which country or group is involved in the crime as the judicial commission it formed put the blame on external forces," said AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil at a press conference at the party's Dhanmondi office. Jalil however rejected the commission report saying it has reflected the government version on the incident. "Both the commission and its report are not acceptable to Awami League. But it is a serious matter when the commission chief himself has pointed to foreign forces' involvement in the incident", he said. "The report is nothing but manifestation of efforts to protect the government. It echoed the views of the prime minister and her cabinet colleagues." Jalil also demanded of the government to state the source of the grenades and who brought those into the country. On Saturday, the one-member judicial inquiry commission headed by Justice M Joynul Abedin submitted its report. Although the commission chief did not make the report public, he shared part of it with newsmen, where it hinted that external forces were responsible for the incident. He however did not identify the forces. A baseless probe report has proved the government is not sincere to identify the criminals, the AL general secretary stressed. Jalil also refuted Justice Abedin's remark on shifting of the AL's August 21 rally venue saying, "He (Abedin) said we changed the venue from Muktangon just three hours ahead of the scheduled rally. It (remark) is nothing but an ill motivated lie." "Awami League's city unit had applied for Muktangon as the rally venue but police did not give permission. Bangabandhu Avenue was then fixed as the venue at least five days ahead of the event." He also showed reporters newspaper advertisements on August 20 and 21 for publicity of the rally. The AL general secretary alleged the inquiry commission chief is a ruling BNP man. "He (Abedin) was vice president of a district unit of BNP", Jalil said without giving details. Other senior leaders of the party were also present at the press conference. Meanwhile, Law Minister Moudud Ahmed last night told BBC Bangla Service AL leaders should not comment on the judicial commission report on the basis of newspaper reports. Their (Awami League leaders) views are nothing new because when the commission was formed, they had commented it would not be impartial.
