Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina and Jatiya Oikya Mancha Convenor Dr Kamal Hossain last night had a closed-door meeting at the former's Dhanmondi residence and committed a firm resolve to forge a greater unity at a time when the national security is at stake. The discussion, held just a day before an Awami League-led 14-party rally at city's Muktangan this afternoon, continued for an hour and 15 minutes from 7:30pm. Senior AL leaders Abdul Jalil MP and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP were present at the meeting. Emerging from the meeting, Dr Kamal told reporters that the discussion focussed on building national unity on the question of national security, threatened by August 17 serial bombings. He blamed the government for its 'total failure' in tackling the situation and hunting down the perpetuators of August 17 bomb blasts as well as other previous bomb attacks. AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said they discussed how to intensify the current movement unitedly and further consolidate the opposition unity to free the nation from the existing insecure situation. Sheikh Selim told The Daily Star last night that Hasina and Dr Kamal discussed ways to forge greater unity and announce more common programmes in future. "They discussed the issues of national security, non-functioning of parliament, rise in essentials' prices and repeated failures of the government in tracking down the perpetuators of bomb incidents," said Selim.
