Ershad doubts about holding election

Jatiya Party chairman H M Ershad yesterday expressed doubt about holding the general elections because of the prevailing situation in the country.

"The situation is indeed fragile. Doubts are raised if the elections will at all be held," Ershad told a public meeting here.

He said the nation is passing through a critical time. The ruling alliance is trying to cling to power while the Awami League is bent on to grab it.

Referring to the recent disquieting incidents, he said it seemed the government had no control over the administration. Five hundred bombs were exploded within 30 minutes in different parts of the country stunning the entire nation. The High Court in a judgment declared illegal the Martial Law Regulations and actions of 1975-79 and the 5th Amendment to the Constitution. Certain circles welcomed the judgment.

He pointed to the Awami League demand for reforming the caretaker government system and the Election Commission. The party, he said, would not take part in the elections without reforms. All these are not happy signs, he added.
