Staffs urge govt not to offload Biman's shares

Employees of Bangladesh Biman yesterday urged the government not to offload 61 percent of shares in the national airline in the interest of Biman and its staffs.

At a rally at Balaka Sabuj Chattar near the airport in the city, leaders of Biman Employees' Steering Committee also alleged that some top level officials in connivance with the ministers concerned have gobbled up Tk 2,400 crore in the last two decades.

Several hundred employees, workers and engineers of Bangladesh Biman joined the rally under the banner of 'Biman Bachao Andolon' to protest irregularities in the Biman.

"No steps have so far been taken to check irregularities in the Biman. So, the government has no right to offload shares to the private sector without consulting the steering committee," said committee convenor Fakhrul Alam Bhuiyan.

He urged the government to consult with the steering committee to resolve the problems facing the Biman and identify those responsible for the irregularities.

General Secretary of Society of Aircraft Engineers of Bangladesh MS Khan Panna also spoke.
