Coalmine blast kills 11 in China

A blast at a coalmine in south China killed 11workers, the official Xinhua News Agency said yesterday.

The blast occurred on Saturday at the Bailongshan Colliery in Yunnan province, Xinhua said. It didn't say what caused the blast or if it was under investigation.

China's coalmines are the world's deadliest, suffering more than 5,000 fatalities annually in explosions, floods and other accidents despite repeated government promises to improve safety.
