Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza reached a new milestone during the match against Afghanistan on September 23, becoming the first bowler from Bangladesh to reach 250 ODI wickets. The cricketer thanked the Tigers' supporters via a Facebook post, saying that it was the love of the supporters that kept him going during harsh times.
His career has been wrought with injuries too. But the paceman has kept coming back strongly, playing through pain. Yesterday he bagged two wickets to reach 250 wickets in his ODI career, removing set batsmen at the crease Asghar Afghan and Hasmatullah Shahidi.
The speedster used to regularly bowl at 145 kph during his early years, running in fast and bowling with great fire. Over the years, the speedster has managed to adjust the loss of pace due to injuries and his cricketing brain has allowed him to do that. He still needs an hour to prepare himself before games – wearing knee braces and tapes on his surgically repaired knees.
Mash knows what dedication is and knows what pain is as well.
"A lot of time has passed. When I started my international career in 2001, my aim and focus was to serve my country when I play. But in the middle my legs were giving up on me. Everytime I got injured, I felt that maybe I won't be able to recover this time. But when I hear the screams of the people in the gallery, I tell my legs to get prepared cause I will play again. Any achievement is cause for happiness. Today I reached the milestone on 250 ODI wickets. It was possible because of your love. My love and respect for all of you. I want to go further with your love and prayers. Pray for me," the Tigers' captain wrote on his personal Facebook account.
The brilliant cricketer, who made his ODI debut in 2001 against Zimbabwe, featured in 194 ODIs, capturing 249 ODI wickets for Bangladesh but has 250 ODI wickets overall because he bagged a wicket against Africa Xi while playing for Asia XI in 2007.
Bangladesh will be hoping Mash takes many more wickets and with the Tigers set to face Pakistan in a virtual semifinal match tomorrow, the fans will be hoping that the speedster can once more light up the way for Bangladesh.
