SC stays HC bar on BNP nominee Tamiz Uddin to contest polls for a day

The Supreme Court today stayed for a day the High Court order that halted the Election Commission’s decision allowing BNP nominee Tamiz Uddin to contest the general election on December 30 from Dhaka-20.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, passed the order following a petition filed by Tamiz Uddin seeking stay on the HC order.

The apex court chamber judge also sent the petition of Tamiz to its full bench for hearing the petition tomorrow, Barrister Shanjid Siddique, a lawyer for Tamiz, told The Daily Star.

He said Tamiz Uddin, chairman of Dhamrai upazila, can contest the upcoming general election if the apex court’s full bench extends its chamber judge’s order.

On Tuesday, the HC stayed the EC’s decision that allowed Tamiz Uddin to contest the election from Dhaka-20 constituency with BNP ticket.

The HC passed the stay order following a writ petition filed by Awami League candidate Benzir Ahmed challenging the EC’s decision to allow Tamiz to contest the polls claiming that Tamiz was holding a profitable post (the office of upazila chairman).
