Upazila chairmen whose nominations were cancelled on the ground that their resignation from their posts were not accepted by the local government ministry are likely to get back their candidacy as the Election Commission okayed candidatures of at least three such election aspirants.
Nominations of more than three dozen candidates mostly from BNP were cancelled by the returning officers.
The candidates said they had resigned from their posts but the returning officers said their resignations were not accepted by the ministry and hence they disqualified.
But according to the law, anyone holding the post of upazila chairman does not need to resign while filing nomination. However, they need to resign once they get elected as lawmakers.
THOSE WHO ARE RULED LEGAL
Khandaker Abu Ashfaque, who was ruled illegal to run from BNP for Dhaka-1 constituency for reasons of being an Upazila chairman, was ruled legal today.
BNP’s Morshed Miltan, who was vying from Bogura-7, and Md Tamijuddin from Dhaka-20, both of whom were disqualified of the same cause, were ruled legal today.
They were cleared to run for the elections during today’s hearing at the Election Commission.
