Jatiya Oikyafront today wrote three separate letters to Election Commission to press home their demands including exemplary punishment of those who attacked the motorcade of its leader Dr Kamal Hossain.
The Oikyafront leaders also demanded withdrawal of the Siraganj Superintendent of Police (SP) and officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station following yesterday’s attack on Romana Mahmud, BNP candidate for Sirajganj-2 constituency.
They also urged the EC to take steps against the attacks on BNP leaders and their supporters all over the country ahead of the general election scheduled to be held on December 30.
BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal handed over all the three letters to EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed at EC headquarters today.
WHO ATTACKED DR KAMAL YESTERDAY?
Jatiya Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain's motorcade came under attack allegedly by ruling party men near the Martyred Intellectuals' Memorial in the capital's Mirpur yesterday.
At least 25 people were injured in the attack around 9:45am when the eminent jurist was returning home after paying tribute to the martyred intellectuals, alleged leaders of the opposition alliance.
Seven to eight cars were vandalized allegedly. Dr Kamal, however, was unhurt.
WHAT HAPPENED TO ROMANA?
At least 15 people, including four policemen and BNP candidate for Sirajganj-2 Romana Mahamud, were injured as police and BNP men clashed in College Road area in the district's Sadar Upazila last night.
Romana, also wife of BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, returned home after primary treatment.
HOW MANY BNP CANDIDATES WERE ARRESTED SO FAR?
Around 150 BNP candidates came under attacks by the ruling party activists and law enforcement agency members across the country so far, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed claimed today.
Of them, two BNP contenders have been kept in jail deliberately, Rizvi also said.
WHAT IS JATIYA OIKYAFRONT?
The Jatiya Oikyafront is an alliance of the BNP, Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, ASM Abdur Rab's Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, and Mahmudur Rahman Manna's Nagorik Oikya.
The Oikyafront was formed on October 13 with the demands of a national election under a neutral government after dissolution of parliament and release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
WHAT ARE OIKYAFRONT’S DEMANDS?
The 11-point goal announced by the alliance includes ensuring checks and balances in the state power, decentralisation of administration, freeing MPs from the stringent restrictions imposed on them under article 70 of the constitution, formation of a constitutional commission to make appointments to all constitutional and other important posts and full independence of the judiciary.
The alliance also announced a seven-point demand, including the one for holding the next parliamentary election under a nonpartisan government, dissolution of parliament before the polls and reconstitution of the Election Commission.
