Bomb blast at Inu's campaign in Kushtia: JSD

12 hurt; six BNP candidates seek CEC's resignation

Twelve activists of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Inu) were reportedly injured in a crude bomb blast at a rally in support of party candidate Hasanul Haque Inu in Kushtia's Bheramara upazila last night.

The bomb exploded in bridge no-3 area around 8:30pm, said Khandakar Shameem Uddin, officer in-charge of Bheramara Police Station.

Abdul Alim Swapan, general secretary of Kushtia JSD, said the injured were taken to different local hospitals. He blamed BNP men for the attack.

“We have received a written complaint from Jasad leader Abdul Alim Swapan in this regard. We are probing the incident,” the OC told The Daily Star.

Inu, also the information minister, is backed by the Awami League-led 14-party alliance for contesting the December 30 national election.

In Rajshahi, BNP candidates in all six constituencies yesterday demanded resignation of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda for “failure” of the Election Commission to take effective steps against the AL men and law enforcers over obstructing opposition men from conducting campaigns.

In the capital, BNP candidate for Dhaka-9 Afroza Abbas and her supporters came under attack allegedly by ruling AL men while campaigning in Dakshin Goran area around 11:15am.

Around 15-20 men from both the parties were wounded in the clash, BNP sources said, adding that Afroza was unhurt.

Contacted, Khilgaon OC Moshiur Rahman said two processions of supporters of both the parties came close to one another. At one stage, some of them scuffled with each other. Police dispersed them and brought the situation under control.

In Chandpur, at least 15 BNP men were hurt in an attack, allegedly by AL men, while campaigning for party candidate (Chandpur-3) Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik on Boro Station Madrasa Road in the morning.

In Satkhira, police last night arrested 45 BNP men from a polls campaign camp of party candidate Shahidul Alam in Kaliganj upazila.

The arrestees include Debhata upazila BNP President Sirajul Islam, Ashashuni upazila unit President Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, Joint Secretary Julfiker Ali Julu and Organising Secretary Khairul Ahsan.

Shahidul claimed that law enforcers arrested 50 BNP men when they were holding a meeting at the electoral camp in Nalta Choumohoni area around 8:30pm.

However, Kaliganj OC Hasan Hafizur Rahman said police arrested 45 BNP men as they were accused in different cases.

Shahidul is contesting against AL candidate AFM Ruhal Haque in Satkhira-3.

In Kushtia, a lawyer filed a case against BNP candidate for Kushtia-4 Syed Mehedi Ahmed Roomy under the Digital Security Act.

According to the case statement, Roomy on December 16 phoned one of his party men and instructed him to attack law enforcers.

Contacted, Roomy denied the allegation and claimed that it was a conspiracy against him.

In Sherpur, BNP candidate for Sherpur-1 Sansila Jebrin at a press conference alleged that AL men were obstructing her supporters from conducting campaigns and police were harassing her party men.

In Faridpur, a court yesterday sent three BNP men to jail. The three were arrested in the last two days on charges of sabotage.

In Mymensingh, police arrested five BNP men from different areas on charges of sabotage.

In Barishal, police picked up eight Jamaat-e-Islami men in C&B Road area early yesterday on charges of planning subversive activities.

In Munshiganj, a campaign camp of AL candidate for Munshignaj-2 Shagufta Yesmin Emily was vandalised early yesterday.

According to media reports, at least 13 BNP candidates and 900 supporters of the party were wounded as ruling party men allegedly attacked the opposition men. The AL men also allegedly attacked campaigns and motorcades of at least 28 BNP and Jatiya Oikyafront candidates.

Police have detained around 255 BNP men since December 10.
