188 foreign observers to watch Dec 30 polls

A total of 188 observers of nine international organisations and a dozen foreign missions in Bangladesh are all set to oversee the December 30 parliamentary election.

“Along with the foreign observers, around 56 foreign journalists also will visit Bangladesh to cover the election. Some of them have already reached Bangladesh for this purpose,” a press release issued by the International Election Observer-Coordination Cell of the foreign ministry said today.

The EU, the Commonwealth, the OIC, Forum of Election Commission Management of South Asia (FEMBOSA), International Republican Institute (IRI), International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), Democracy International (Dl), Dipendra Kandel Initiative (DKl) and SAARC Human Rights Foundation are among the organisations, said the press release.

The foreign missions accredited to observe the election include Embassies or High Commissions of the USA, the UK, Greece, Ireland, Japan, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark and others.

The foreign observers who are coming from a range of countries including Australia, Bhutan, Canada, India, USA, Samoa, Malaysia, Maldives, Nigeria, Nepal, Palestine, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and others.

Along with the foreign observers, some 56 foreign journalists are also all set to visit Bangladesh to cover the election.

They will be representing different international media like BBC, Cable News Int. INC, Deutsche Welle, NHK, The Yomiuri Shimbun, AFP, AP, News Agency, Al-Jazeera, German TV, TV Today Network, New York Times, Le Monde, The Economist, Zee News, Kyodo News, Times of India, The Hindu, National Public Radio (USA), Strategic News, Frontline, The Week and others. The stringers of foreign media are also at work during the election times.

It may be mentioned that around 118 local organisations with more than 25,000 of their observers are prepared to oversee the upcoming election.
