Alleging that there is no level-playing field for the December 30 election, Jahiruddin Swapan, a BNP candidate for Barishal-1 constituency, has urged the chief election commissioner (CEC) to visit Barishal and observe the ongoing situation there.
He came up with the call while holding a press conference at his residence in Gaurnadi upazila’s Sorikal area yesterday, our local correspondent reports.
While briefing reporters, Swapan claimed that at least 30 of his supporters were injured in attacks by ruling Awami League men since beginning of the campaign for the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.
“We cannot continue electioneering fearing further attacks,” he said adding “Even I am afraid of being attacked as Gournadi upazila unit AL General Secretary Harisur Rahman has given threats to me.
“Police did not receive any general diary (GD) from us,” he alleged.
When contacted, Harisur Rahman, also mayor of Gournadi municipality, said, “Swapan makes such allegations as he has no issue to draw people's attention”.
Barishal’s Returning Officer (RO) SM Ojyor Rahman told our correspondent, “We have received complaint from him (Swapan) and ordered police to take necessary action”.
