Ruling Awami League today informed the Election Commission that its party men are being targeted all over the country, a development which saw two of its leaders killed yesterday.
A five-member delegation of the ruling party led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Political Adviser HT Imam went to the commission this afternoon and urged it to take actions against those involved in the violence.
“We have informed the Commission that the main target of the violence centring the elections is Awami League men,” HT Imam told reporters emerging from the meeting with the EC.
The commission has also been informed of the violent incidents that swept Noakhali, Shahjadpur and Faridpur districts.
“We have urged the Commission to take actions against those involved after analysing the photos and video footage of the incidents,” he also said.
In response, the Commission has assured the AL delegation that appropriate steps would be taken to this end, according to the prime minister’s adviser.
WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY
Two Jubo League and Awami League leaders were killed in Noakhali and Faridpur as violence broke out yesterday, the second day of election campaign.
On the other hand, BNP candidates, including party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and their supporters came under attack allegedly by ruling party men in several districts, with dozens injured.
