Violence part of election culture

Election Commissioner Rafiqul says in Rajshahi

Violence during election campaign is part of the country's political culture, Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam said yesterday.

“In our normal culture beyond politics, we are accustomed to fight and exchange of hot words, and when it comes to politics, things get heated up. It doesn't feel good if there is no heat,” he said while responding to queries by journalists at Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy  auditorium.

His comment came at a time when the rift between Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar has deepened over the issue of level playing field for the December 30 national polls.

Rafiqul compared the ongoing violence to the altercation between bride and groom sides. “The bride and groom sides often fight over different issues during a marriage ceremony. And despite all these, the marriage takes place.”

Some stray incidents of violence happened, but it has not yet reached an alarming level, the commissioner said, adding that the army would be deployed in due time.

Later, Rafiqul gave an inaugural speech at a workshop on “women safety and protection during elections” at the auditorium.

UN Women, UNDP and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation assisted the EC in organising the programme.
