Hasina alerts party men to conspiracies

Top AL leaders say, citing their meeting with her

The Awami League has instructed its grassroots leaders and activists to be on high alert on the voting day to thwart any attempt to foil tomorrow's election.

The ruling party also asked its activists and supporters to be watchful about any unknown people wearing “Mujib Coat” and scarfs with “boat” symbol around polling stations, AL sources told The Daily Star last night.

“They have also been instructed not to leave polling stations before vote counting completes,” said a source, asking not to be named.

The directives came after five top AL leaders involved with the party's election steering committee met party chief Sheikh Hasina at the Gono Bhaban last night.

The five are AL joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman and organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque and AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

Earlier in the afternoon, they held a meeting with leaders of the party and its front organisations about the latest polls situation and the party's preparations at the AL chief's Dhanmondi office.

During their meeting with Hasina at the Gono Bhaban, the prime minister asked them to be ready to face any circumstances on the voting day, according to the sources.

She also told her party leaders that conspiracies were on to foil the polls.

At the meeting in the Dhanmondi office, top party leaders said that public support was in favour of the AL, but BNP and Jamaat men were plotting to foil the polls, the sources said.

The meeting also discussed that BNP and Jamaat men made a huge number of “Mujib Coats” and scarves with “boat” symbol, which they will wear to mislead voters.

After the two meetings, the five leaders conveyed the message to district and upazila level leaders.

Grassroots leaders and activists were also asked to guard every polling station.
