JS Polls 2018

Jatiya Oikyafront today urged the Election Commission to bar Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from inaugurating textbook distribution programme.

“She is the chief of a political party. It will be an added advantage for her,” the major political opposition said in a letter written to the commission.

Dr Kamal Hossain, who signed the letter, said the programme, at the cost of public money, will be violation of the electoral code of conduct.

Usually the Textbook Festival Day is observed on December 30 across the country. This year there will be no problem if the programme is shifted to January 1 or 2, Kamal said in the letter.

Such programme can be used as tool of improving the image of person and can influence election process, says the letter handed over to the CEC office by Oikyfront media coordinator Jahangir Alam Mintu.

It is EC's duty to ensure equal opportunities for all candidates holding of the upcoming general election in a free, fair and credible election, he said in the letter.

"Candidates of ruling party and alliance are regularly breaching the electoral code of conduct and the commission is keeping mum. It also proves helplessness of the commission.”

PM Hasina usually inaugurates the textbook distribution from her official residence and then the school authorities start handing over new book from January 1.

The government has scheduled the programme for December 24 this year, ahead of the 11th parliamentary election to be held on December 30.

This year, the government will distribute 35.43 crore books to 4.37 crore students of primary and secondary schools and madrassahs with free of cost.
