IGP should have quit after Avijit killing: Khairul Haque

The inspector general of police (IGP) should have resigned immediately after the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy, said Law Commission Chairman Justice ABM Khairul Haque today.

“The IGP should have quit the day Avijit was killed. But, I don’t expect it as such culture is not practiced in our country,” said Khairul Haque, also a former chief justice.

He was addressing a discussion on Avijit murder, ongoing terrorism and responsibilities of the government and civil society at the WVA auditorium in Dhaka this evening.

Police were standing inactive some 15 yards from the spot where Avijit and his wife came under the attack.

“He carries three stars, but these hardly come to any of our service,” the former chief justice criticised the police chief.

Assailants brutally hacked blogger Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya on February 26 on the Dhaka University campus, after the couple came out of the Ekushey Boi Mela around 8:30pm.

They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Avijit died around 10:20pm.

Bonya, herself a writer and blogger, suffered critical injuries in the incident.

Avijit recently came to Bangladesh on February 16 to attend the launching of his books at the Boi Mela.
