No legal bar to continue Dr Afzal's trial

The High Court yesterday cleared the way for a Dhaka court to continue trial of a graft case filed against Dr Afzal Hossain Raj.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order after rejecting a petition filed by Afzal on November 26 last year for scrapping the trial, four days after a Dhaka court framed charges against him.

Following the HC order, there is no legal bar for the trial court to continue the proceedings in the case, ACC's lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam said adding, Afzal is now on bail.

In 2008 ACC filed the case against Dr Afzal, son of former caretaker government adviser Justice Fazlul Huq, accusing him of concealing information and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
