Lightning kills 5 in Sunamganj

Five people were killed and three others injured in separate lightning incidents today in Sunamganj, the north-eastern borderline district in the county.

The deceased are: Abdul Jalil, 50, Harivokto Das, 45, Razu Miah, 20, Abdul Kader, 18, and Rasheda Begum, 31.

Four of them were killed by separate thunderbolts at Dirai and Dharampasa upazila when they were harvesting paddy at their croplands in the morning, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting police and witnesses.

Meanwhile, Rasheda was struck while she went out her house to bring cattle at Kuna Kucha village in Tahirpur Upazila around 8:00am, said Mohammad Shahidullah, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tahirpur Police Station.

The injured were taken to Dirai upazila health complex for treatment, said Bayes Alam, OC of Dirai Police Station.
