Nijhum Dwip submerged in “high tide”, deer being washed away
Nijhum Dwip union and national park of Noakhali's Hatiya Upazila have been submerged due to rising water from an "unusually high tide" in Meghna.
Owing to this, the deer that live on this island are being washed away because there is not enough high ground in the forest. Many animals are taking refuge in the locality or in neighbouring pastures.
Hatiya's UNO Salim Hossain confirmed this information to The Daily Star.
Chairman of Nijhum Dwip Union Parishad, Nurul Afsar, told our correspondent, "The entire island has been submerged in tidal water for the last 4-5 days. The island's national park, agricultural land and fish in hundreds of ponds have been swept away."
There is no flood control embankment in this union, the chairman said.
"Due to the lack of an embankment, the villages and crop lands of Nijhum Dwip bordering the Meghna river have been flooded during the tide. Along with that, deer and other animals are drowning in the water," the chairman added.
