‘Hand of God’ goal would take me to jail now’

Argentina’s legendary former No. 10 Diego Maradona has claimed that he would be arrested for scoring the ‘Hand of God’ goal in the current Video Assistant Referee (VAR) era.

The iconic Argentine playmaker famously punched the ball past Peter Shilton in the England net when the two sides met up at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup in 1986.

Maradona claimed he had headed the ball into the net and referee Ali Bin Nassar allowed the goal.

The goal later came to be known as the ‘Hand of God’ after Maradona commented on post-match interview that he had scored 'a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.'

In an interview for Bwin, French World Cup winner Robert Pires asked: 'What do you think would have happened in the England vs Argentina match of '86 if VAR had existed?'

Maradona joked that it was not possible to steal in front of 80,000 people to which Pires reminded him that in this day, the whole world would be watching.

Asked which hand he had used to score the goal, Maradona said: 'I did "tik-tik" and I put my head right behind it and (Terry) Fenwick said "Hand! Hand!" "What hand? Goal!!" I tell him, "Goal!!".'
