Now even Bangladesh players can play in the best leagues: Drogba

Former Chelsea star Didier Drogba believes that the Russia World Cup has proved beyond doubt that it is open for anybody to win. He even suggested that Bangladesh can also be a beneficiary of an open-border policy in the best European Leagues, which are helping to bridge the gap in quality between the big and the small national teams.

“I think it’s a very interesting World Cup and speaks about what is happening right now in the world with all the borders opening and players being able to travel and play in the best leagues from England, Germany, Spain, Italy. Now you can have a player from Bangladesh playing in one of the best leagues. So, it reduces the difference of quality because you learn from the best.”

Drogba believes that leagues all over the world have made an impact on improving the state of international football. Players who go to play in other national leagues, come back to their country with information and thus improve tactical nous of small teams. The World Cup has benefitted from more competition and thus big teams no longer have complete hegemony.

“We have seen in this World Cup that there are no small teams anymore because all these small players from small countries are playing in the best leagues. They go to another country and come back with the knowledge and the quality and now you can see that,” Drogba told reporters at Moscow Media centre this afternoon. The former Ivorian international made this remark while responding to a Bangladeshi reporter, whose question actually was focused on the reason behind early departure of World Cup heavyweights Brazil, Germany and Argentina.
