Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Russian national team players and their head coach to discuss the results of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday as per Russian news agency TASS.
Russia were eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinal match against Croatiayesterday in Sochi. The host nation lost the penalty shootout 4-3 after the game ended 2-2 in regular and 30-minute overtime period.
"Putin phoned Cherchesov prior to the game on Saturday and wished him success," Peskov the Press Secretary for the President of Russia was quoted as saying by TASS.
"After the game, Putin phoned him again and noted the team’s worthy performance at the World Cup, as well as Russia’s beautiful and determined game in the historic match against Croatia." he added.
"The president invited the head coach and team members to an event to sum up the results of the championship and discuss Russia’s World Cup heritage," the Kremlin spokesman said.
The Russia team was the lowest-ranked national team at the tournament. They beat previous world champions Spain inthe Round of 16 to make it to the quarterfinals.
Cherchesov’s men produced a courageous performance in the quarter-final against Croatia, netting an equalizer with less than five minutes remaining in the game. However, last-minute heroics were not enough to book a spot in the semi-final in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.
Russia is staging its first-ever FIFA World Cup, which kicked off in Moscow with a spectacular opening show at Luzhniki Stadium on the evening of June 14.
