It was an amazing scene at the Samara Arena's make-shift press centre moments after Russia won their round of 16 World Cup match against Spain on penalties. The whole facility erupted, with a few Russian journalists running for joy and volunteers embarking on emotional hug.
The victory that sent Spain, another heavyweight after Germany and Argentina, packing from the Word Cup was easily the biggest moment in Russia's football history. The game headed into tie-breakers after the marathon 120 minutes ended 1-1.

"I'm so happy because it was first time.This is a great moment for our team. We did not expect that and now they have made history in Russian football. It's a super moment, a great moment, I think everybody in Russia is very happy for what they have done," said Alex, who works for Ruptly news agency. He was following the game on the TV with the two Spanish reporters sitting opposite to him. He ran down the centre in ecstasy and after he cooled down, he said: "It was just my emotions, it was my expressions and I'm really happy. Our goalkeeper is one of the best," Alex said.
The lady volunteers in the press centre also joined the celebration, although it was very short-lived. When asked to express their feeling about the magnificent result, they appeared apprehensive. However, one said the she would talk if her higher authority allowed her. She returned after a few minutes with a brimming face and said: "I don't know I was actually speechless. I have no idea what to say. I did not think they could win but they did it. Next game, Croatia may be the next opponent," said Tanya.
However, she was not aware of their great football hero Lev Yashin, the magnificent goalkeeper of the Soviet Union who was responsible for taking his side to the semifinal of the 1966 World Cup in England.
