The toss did not take place today at Bristol in the match against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The match has been abandoned following incessant rain.
Bangladesh will consider it one point dropped and now have 3 points from four games. Sri Lanka now have four points from four with their earlier match against Pakistan also abandoned due to rain. Bangladesh would have been hoping for a win against their Asian counterparts today with recent results between the two sides giving them a slight mental edge.
The distinction between 'no result' and 'match abandoned' is that in case of an abandoned match, a toss does not take place. With today's result, the 2019 World Cup in England becomes the World Cup with the highest number of abandoned games.
1:57 pm: The match has been called off due to rain. The teams will share the points.
Toss was delayed for the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Bristol as it continued to rain following non-stop overnight rain.
12:20 pm: As it is still raining non-stop in Bristol, the pitch inspection has been delayed. No word on when the next one may be. Looking bleaker and bleaker in Bristol
11:20 am: It was just announced that a pitch inspection is planned for 12:15 pm (5:15 pm Bangladesh time), assuming of course that the rain stops.
10:50 am: The Bangladesh team arrived at the County Ground in Bristol at around 10:45 and immediately made their way out of the rain and cold to the shelter of the dressing room. Mushfiqur Rahim soon made his way out to greet the few fans who are braving the rain and sitting on the stand opposite. "You will score a century today," one fan shouted. Mushfiqur just responded with a smile and pointed up to the heavens, as if saying that he would have to play to score a ton.
10:28 am: Rain has just gotten heavier here in dreary Bristol and the pitch inspection scheduled for 10:30 am (3:30 pm Bangladesh time) has been delayed. The Bangladesh team are not even at the ground. There really is no good news from Bristol, weatherwise. Or otherwise. There was a sceduled pitch inspection at 10:30am local time (3:30pm BD time).
Unfortunately for Bangladesh, who have one win from three World Cup matches so far, the forecast is for rain throughout the day with the Met office predicting at least a 50 per cent chance of rain for the duration of the match.
As Bangladesh skilled Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said yesterday, this match is a very important one for Bangladesh as they lost their last two games against New Zealand and England. Also, Bangladesh would have expected to win this game as Sri Lanka are ranked two places lower. A win would have got their race to the semifinals back on track.
An abandoned match would give each team a point each, and mean that Bangladesh would have to win four games out of the next five against West Indies, Australia, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan.
