Records were broken when England faced Afghanistan in the World Cup at Manchester today. While England skipper Eoin Morgan scored the highest number of sixes in an ODI innings (17) to reach his 148 off 71 balls, Afghanistan leg spinner Rashid Khan had a night to forget.
The Afghan spinner was battered as he conceded 110 runs in his nine overs -- the most embarrassing spell of his career. His spell of 0 for 110 was the most expensive spell in World Cups and the second most expensive in all ODIs. Rashid was the No.1 all-rounder in ODIs before the Bangladesh super-star Shakib Al Hasan took over him in the rankings before coming to the World Cup.
Last year, Rashid Khan had become the youngest No.1 in the ICC's rankings for ODI bowlers. Currently ranked 3rd, Rashid had another spectacular stint for Sunrisers Hyderabad and much was expected from him as Afghanistan geared up for their fifth World Cup match against the hosts today.
However, Rashid Khan had an ordinary time in the World Cup before the game against England. He returned figures of 1 for 52 against Australia before picking up 2 for 17 against Sri Lanka. He went for 45 runs without picking up a wicket against South Africa.
Most expensive bowling figures in World Cups:
0/110 (9) Rashid Khan (AFG) v England (2019)
2/105 (12) Martin Snedden (NZ) v England (1983)
1/104 (10) Jason Holder (WI) v South Africa (2015)
2/101 (10) Dawlat Zadran (AFG) v Australia (2015)
