India appoints Lt Gen Anil Chauhan its new chief of Defence Staff
A retired army officer with expertise in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the north east was today (September 28, 2022) appointed as India's new Chief of Defence Staff, the country's top military officer.
Lt Gen (retd) Anil Chauhan has been named for the post of CDS nine months after the death of Gen Bipin C Rawat in a helicopter crash in December last year, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, Lt Gen Chauhan, a highly-decorated officer, had held several command, staff and key appointments and has extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and North-East India, the Indian Defence Ministry said in a statement.
Gen Rawat, who had been India's first Chief of Defence Staff, and his wife were killed in December after a military chopper crashed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, killing all the 13 persons on board.
Chauhan will also function as secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs with effect from the date of his assumption of charge of CDS and until further orders, according to the statement.
Born on May 18, 1961, He was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
Chauhan had also served in a United Nations mission to Angola. He superannuated from the Indian Army on May 31, 2021.
