Additional SP, civil service official held over July killings

Tribunal sent them to jail
International Crime Tribunal

Md Saiful Islam, former senior assistant commissioner (executive magistrate) of Narsingdi, and Anirban Chowdhury, additional superintendent of Rangamati police (traffic), were sent to jail on Monday after their arrests over crimes against humanity committed in Narsingdi during the July uprising.

The two were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal following their arrests. The tribunal ordered their imprisonment.

ICT prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim confirmed that arrest warrants had earlier been issued for both of them in connection with the police shooting in Narsingdi on July 18, which killed two students --Tahmid Bhuiyan, a class-10 student, and Imon Ahmed, a college student.

This marks the first time a Bangladesh civil service (admin cadre) officer has been arrested in a case related to crimes against humanity.

The prosecution alleged that the then executive magistrate Saiful and additional SP Anirban ordered the shootings.

During the July movement, at least 18 people were killed and at least 435 injured in Narsingdi alone.

On Monday, Anirban, a police cadre of the 30th BCS, was taken into custody for interrogation by the Office of the Superintendent of Police in Rangamati.
