Corruption: Five including former railways minister sued

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today filed five separate cases against five people including former railways minister Zillul Hakim and his wife and son.

Former lawmaker Fahmi Gulandaz Babel and his wife Sharmeen Gulandaz were among the five accused.

ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain confirmed the information to The Daily Star.

According to the first case statement, Zillul, during his tenure as minister and lawmaker, allegedly abused his power to acquire wealth worth Tk 24.29 crore, disproportionate to his known income sources. He reportedly deposited Tk 145.44 crore and withdrew Tk 133.36 crore through 19 bank accounts.

In the second case, Zillul's wife Sayda Hakim, was accused of acquiring wealth worth Tk 4.27 crore with her husband's assistance, which could not be explained by her legitimate income. She allegedly conducted transactions that amounted to Tk 20.24 crore through six bank accounts.

In the third case, his son Ashik Mahmud Mitul was accused of acquiring wealth worth around Tk 2.62 crore with the assistance of his father. However, the amount of Tk 2.62 crore could not be explained by his legitimate income, the case statement said.

Allegedly, Ashik performed transactions amounted to Tk 15.50 crore through his only bank account.

On the other hand, the ACC filed two cases against former lawmaker Fahmi Gulandaz Babel and his wife Sharmeen Gulandaz for amassing illicit wealth and engaging in suspicious transactions.

Fahmi is accused of conducting transactions worth Tk 60.98 crore through 16 bank accounts and USD1.71 lakh. He allegedly acquired assets worth Tk 20.11 crore beyond his known income sources.

Sharmeen reportedly amassed Tk 1.02 crore in unexplained wealth while managing transactions of Tk 3.17 crore through three bank accounts.
