Confirming the matter, Sub-Inspector Rumi Tabrez, also duty officer of New Market Police Station told The Daily Star that senior officials rushed to the spot after receiving information about the clash.
They are trying to bring the situation under control, said the police official.
Talking to our DU correspondent, a student of Dhaka College, willing not to be named, said five students of Dhaka College went to a fast-food restaurant, located at number 2 gate of New Market around 10:30 pm for snacks.
An altercation ensued between the students and fast-food shop owners and staff when the owner beat two child labourers of the restaurant over a trivial matter and the students protested it and tried to solve it.
At one stage, the fast-food shop owner and staffers attacked the students.
Witnesses further said that hundreds of students from the campus rushed to the spot and attacked the marketplace.
Later, traders soon organised and chased the students. Chases and counter-chases made the Mirpur Road in front of the New Market look like a battlefield, reports eyewitnesses.
