A Sramik League leader, who was an inmate at Gazipur District Jail, died at the jail last night.

The deceased is Sheikh Jahirul Islam Zahir, of Sindighi village under Maona union of Sreepur upazila.

Family sources said Jahirul was the Sramik League Sreepur upazila unit general secretary.

At 9:00pm yesterday, Gazipur District Jail Superintendent Mohammad Rafiqul Quader told The Daily Star that a prisoner named Sheikh Jahirul Islam Zahir died at 5:20pm, while undergoing treatment at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital.

The jail superintendent said on December 6, the accused in the murder case was sent to Gazipur District Jail through the court. He suddenly fell ill in Gazipur District Jail at 4:40pm and was sent to the hospital for treatment.

Rafiqul said the process of handing over the body is underway.

The deceased prisoner's father Mujibur Rahman and the deceased's brother are now in jail.

When asked in what case he was arrested, Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mondal said, "We will have to look at the case documents then inform you."
