Sections of Dhaka University students expressed solidarity with the students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology today, after 37 students were suspended for their alleged involvement in clashes that occurred on February 18 and 19.

In Madhur Canteen, Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) demanded the resignation of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Vice Chancellor within 24 hours, accusing him of backing those responsible for an alleged attack on students on February 18.

Zahid Ahsan, central member secretary of BGCS, alleged that despite a ban on student politics on the KUET campus, activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have been carrying out political activities with the support of the university's vice chancellor.

"Hundreds of KUET students were injured in the February 18 attack allegedly carried out by pro-BNP groups. Yet, no visible action was taken by the VC," he said.

Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury, chief organiser of BGCS, claimed that the current VC has political affiliations with the BNP and previously served as the president of JCD.

BGCS demanded an impartial investigation into the February 18 incident, including the clashes, legal cases, and suspension of students, to ensure that only those truly responsible are held accountable.

Other demands include the immediate withdrawal of cases filed against students, the revocation of suspension orders within 24 hours, and the reopening of dormitories within 48 hours. The organisation also called for the immediate arrest of the individual responsible for attacking Mahin Ahmed.

Zahid Ahsan read out the written statement on behalf of BGCS during the press conference.

The student body warned of tougher protests if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe.

Over at the Raju Memorial Sculpture near TSC, another section of students organised a protest program with similar demands. After the rally, the protesters started a procession from TSC and marched through VC Chattar and returned to TSC.

At the rally, AB Zubayer, a student from DU's Islamic Studies department and a former co-coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination, said that a new form of fascism is emerging after the uprising.

"The identities of BNP leaders and activists who carried out the attack have been revealed, but the BNP-leaning administration at KUET has not brought any criminals to justice, have not even filed a case. Instead, cases have been filed against the student victims," he stated.

The protesters warned they would announce more stringent programs if their demands are not met.
