Bangla Academy suspends list of awardees

Just two days after announcing the 2024 Bangla Academy Literary Awards, the government has postponed its decision.

A statement issued by the Bangla Academy confirmed that a revised list of award recipients will be announced within three working days.

The original announcement, made on Thursday, recognised ten individuals for their significant contributions to various genres of Bangla literature.

The honorees included Salimullah Khan for essay writing, Masud Khan for poetry, Selim Morshed for fiction, Subhasish Sinha for drama, and Faruk Newaz for children's literature. GH Habib was recognised as the best transcript writer, while Muhammad Shahjahan Mia was set to receive the award in the research category. Rezaur Rahman was honoured in the science category, Mohammad Hannan for his contributions to Liberation War literature, and Syed Jamil Ahmed for his work in folklore.

However, a statement from Bangla Academy, signed by its Director General Mohammad Azam, said following a meeting of the Literary Award committee, the decision was made to reconsider the original list. The committee cited the current socio-political climate and various allegations raised against some of the nominees as factors influencing the reconsideration.

The statement said the matter is under investigation, and a new list of awardees will be released shortly.
