BGB stops BSF from building barbed-wire fence on Lalmonirhat border
India's Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to construct a barbed wire fence along the zero line of Dahagram border in Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila in violation of international border laws, escalating tensions in the surrounding areas since yesterday.
"BSF was obstructed when they began constructing the barbed wire fence along the zero line. They stopped initially but resumed shortly after. Discussions have taken place at the sector and battalion levels," said Rangpur 51 BGB Battalion Assistant Director (AD) Aamir Khosru.
"The BSF has been asked to remove the barbed wire fence, and the matter will be jointly inspected by senior officials from both border forces," he added.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), senior officials from both sides are scheduled to visit the site today to address the issue and resolve the matter through a flag meeting.
BGB and local sources told The Daily Star that BSF deployed 20–25 workers to construct a barbed wire fence spanning about half a kilometre, from sub-pillar 37 to 46 of main pillar 8 along the Bangladesh-India border in Dahagram yesterday morning. Members of the Panbari and Dahagram camps of Rangpur-51 BGB Battalion arrived at the scene and protested the construction. However, the BSF later resumed construction.
This incident drew the attention of locals, who gathered at the site alongside security forces from both countries.
Dahagram Union Parishad member Faridul Islam said, "The BSF has begun constructing the fence illegally. If it is not removed, we will be compelled to organise a movement."
Additional BGB personnel have been deployed along the border, maintaining a high state of alert.
As per the international law, no establishments can be set up within 150 yards of the zero line.
