Govt keen to implement media commission measures

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today said the interim government will take immediate steps to implement reform proposals of the Media Reform Commission which can be done instantly.
Speaking at the State Guest House Jamuna where the commission submitted its final report to him, the chief adviser said, "We want to swiftly implement those reform proposals which can be done now. For that, I would like the reform commission to promptly present us the recommendations that can be quickly implemented," said the chief adviser.
Referring to the work of the Media Reform Commission, led by senior journalist Kamal Ahmed, the chief adviser said the report as "invaluable" and suggested that it should be made available for reading by students in journalism departments at universities and other interested people.
Regarding the fact that domestic television channels are compelled to use a specific satellite, making them inaccessible from abroad, the chief adviser said, "The government will take necessary measures to ensure that Bangladesh's television channels can be viewed by Bangladeshis living abroad and interested foreigners."
The members of the commission, including Kamal Ahmed, handed over their report to the chief adviser.
Other members of the commission include Prof Gitiara Nasreen from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University, Shamsul Haque Zahid, editor of The Financial Express and representative of the Editors' Council, Anjan Chowdhury, managing director of Maasranga Television and representative of the Association of Television Owners (ATCO), Akhtar Hossain Khan, secretary of the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB), Syed Abdallah Ahmed, former general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club, Fahim Ahmed, CEO of Jamuna Television and Trustee of the Broadcast Journalist Centre, Jimmy Amir, convenor of the Media Support Network, Mostafa Sabuj, Bogura district correspondent of The Daily Star, Titu Dutta Gupta, deputy editor of Business Standard, and student representative Abdullah Al Mamun.
