Student killed in clash between protesters and police, AL activists
A student was killed and at least 200 injured today in Savar during a clash between quota protesters on one side and police and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies on the other.
The victim was identified as Shaikh Ashabul Yamin, a student of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Mirpur, his father Md Mohiuddin told our Savar correspondent.
The incident took place at the Savar Bazar bus stand area around noon.
Yusuf Ali, duty manager of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, told The Daily Star that there were bullet marks on the body and that the student was brought to the hospital dead.
Among the injured, 60 were under treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital and 34 were receiving treatment at different public hospitals.
Earlier, the quota reform protesters blocked the Pakiza bus stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway around 12:30pm and proceeded towards the Pakiza area while leaders and activists of the AL, its associate bodies, police, and BGB members took position there.
As the quota reform protesters moved forward, AL members, their associate bodies, police, and BGB members chased them away.
The protesters set fire on the highway, and the police later fired tear gas shells and opened fire on the protesters.
Clashes are still ongoing at the Savar Bazar bus stand as of the filing of this report at 8:00pm.
