At least 20 people, including four policemen, were injured during a clash between BNP men and police in Gazipur city this (October 10, 2022) afternoon.

The clash ensued as police obstructed a procession brought out by leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies as part of the central programme, reports our Gazipur correspondent quoting party men and police.

Gazipur District BNP President AKM Fazlul Haque Milon said as part of the central programme around 4:30 pm, a rally was organised at the party office in Gazipur city.

At the end of the rally, a peaceful procession was brought out from the party office when police suddenly charged batons at them. At one stage, the law enforcers fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the men, he added.

He said some people, including Jubo Dal leader Zakir, were shot. Besides, at least 15 leaders and activists of the party were also injured.

Police detained eight to 10 people, including Dalia, joint secretary of Upazila Mahila Dal, from the spot and surrounding areas, claimed Milon.

Rezwan Ahmed, additional deputy assistant commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), said leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies blocked the road and tried to bring out a procession soon after their rally ended.

"Considering the sufferings of the people, we requested them not to bring out the procession. But they ignored our request and started throwing bricks at the police and attacked us with various sticks. Four policemen were injured," added the police official.
