Parts of southern districts have been suffering from power cuts for more than 36 hours till this evening.

From Sunday morning till 6:00pm today, at least 2.70 crore subscribers of two power distributors out of 4.50 crore were out of electricity, according to the data of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB).

The data shows most of the areas were impacted by Cyclone Remal -- Chattogram, Barishal, Feni, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Jashore, Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Cumilla, Mymensingh, Sirajganj, and Natore.

Mobile phone and internet services were also disrupted as over 10,000 mobile towers or base transceiver stations (BTS) went out of service in the affected areas.

Monirul Islam, a private job holder in Dhaka, tried to get in touch with his 80-year-old mother who lives in a remote village in Satkhira's Debhata.

"I desperately tried to reach my mother after Remal hit the district around 8:00pm on Sunday. I finally could get through to her over phone after 9:00pm," he told The Daily Star.

The family has been out of communication till this evening since power supply was not restored.

Fazilatunnessa, a 65-year-old living in Dhaka, who has a family living in Bagerhat's Dema, faced a similar ordeal.

"I tried to contact them when Remal hit the area around 9:00pm yesterday [Sunday], but failed."

A resident of Satkhira's Kaliganj upazila Jakir Hossain said they have been out of electricity since Sunday morning.

"It was raining continuously since Sunday morning and no sign of power supply restoration till now."

Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) had switched off some power plants in the coastal areas as a safety measure due to Cyclone Remal.

As a result, the power production reduced to nearly 4,000 megawatts against the demand of more than 12,000MW today.

Due to low production, many parts of the country including the capita faded power outages since early today.

As the situation improves, power transmission and distribution system will be checked and gradually restored, said Shameem Hasan, spokesperson of PDB.

In a press release, the energy ministry said at least 2.7 crore consumers in coastal areas have been out of power till this evening.

"At least 2,718 electric poles, 2,363 transformers, 71,862 spans, 22,886 insulators, and 53,465 electric metres under the BREB have been damaged," it said.

The damage was worth Tk 91.20 crore, it said, adding that employees of power distributors have started restoring the distribution system.

Besides, around 4.5 lakh connections have been cut under the West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL), which distributes power to the Barishal and Khulna regions.

The total damage is worth around Tk 5.76 crore, the release said.
