Huge tailback on Mirpur Road after RMG workers' demo
Vehicular movement on Mirpur Road in Kalyanpur of Dhaka was disrupted for over an hour today as workers of a garment factory blocked the road demanding arrears ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Over 250 workers of Monde Apparels Limited blocked Mirpur Road around 2:00pm after they found their workplace shut, our staff correspondent reports from the spot.
The workers’ payment is due for three months, the correspondent said quoting an agitated worker.
Around 3:10pm, vehicles started plying after law enforcers were able to take the agitating garments workers move to a nearby place, the correspondent said.
Due to the disruption of traffic, a long tailback has been taken place on Mirpur Road towards Gabtoli which will take hours to clear off, Selim Uzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Darussalam Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The garment factory authorities were supposed to pay the workers their arrears but the workers found the factory shut today.
Earlier, the authorities changed the date of payment thrice -- June 15, 20 and 23, another protesting worker alleged.
