Modric vows to beat Iceland for Argentina

The Croatian number 10 Luka Modric said that they are going to beat Iceland in their final match of the group stage to make it easier for the Albiceleste, whose fate will now depend on other results after their humiliating 3-0 loss against Croatia last night at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Modric, who was brilliant in their 3-0 rout against Argentina as he scored a screamer from outside the box—a typical ‘Luka Modric goal’, was very much modest and humble during his post-match statements given to Argentina's TV Publica. He praised Messi and also wished Argentina good luck before he vowed to help them reach the second round of the competition by defeating Iceland in their next outing.

“Messi is an incredible player but he can't do everything alone,” Modric explained to Argentina's TV Publica. “In football you need help and it can't be done alone. Although he is great, great but it can't be done alone.”

“The way we played helped today too. We closed the gaps so [Javier] Mascherano couldn't pass the ball in the beginning and then later when we got our rhythm of the game we played very well. I wish Argentina good luck. We are going to beat Iceland for them.” Modric concluded.

However a report by Goal.com suggested that the Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said he will rest players in their final World Cup group match against Iceland, potentially dealing a damaging blow to Argentina's hopes of going through.

When asked if he will rest any players against Iceland, despite first place in the group being up for grabs, Dalic, according to Goal.com told a news conference: “Yes, I will.”

Leaving out key players in their match against Iceland means Modric will most likely be rested by Dalic and that cannot be good news for Argentina as the man who vowed to defeat Iceland for them may not have any role to play in the encounter.

Surely Argentina will now need all the help they can get.
