Jatiya Party (Zafar) leader TIM Fazley Rabbi, who was the BNP-led 20-party alliance candidate for Gaibandha-3, passed away at a hospital in the capital yesterday. He was 84.
Rabbi was taken to the United Hospital with chest complaints. He died around 2:30am, said Mezbahul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer of Palashbari in Gaibandha.
He left behind his wife, three sons and two daughters.
Rabbi became the lawmaker of Gaibandha-3 in 1986 and remained so for six consecutive terms.
He first joined Ershad-led Jatiya Party in 1986. Ershad made him a technocrat minister then. Later, he became land minister and minister for relief and rehabilitation respectively.
He was also a political adviser to Ershad.
After the 2008 national polls, he left Jatiya Party (Ershad) and joined the Jatiya Party led by Kazi Zafar as vice-chairman.
