26 hurt as AL, BNP men clash in Noakhali

16 BNP men held

At least 26 leaders and activists of ruling Awami League and opposition BNP were hurt in a clash in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali today.

Both the parties blamed each other for the clash that ensued in Bhuiyarhat bazar area following an altercation between the AL and BNP supporters, our local correspondent reports.

Witnesses said BNP candidate for Noakhali-4 constituency Mohammad Shahjahan was addressing a rally in the area, in the meantime, AL men also reached there in procession, triggering the clash.

A series of chase and counter chase took place during the clash, leaving at least 26 leaders and activists of both the parties injured, police said.

Several motorcycles and electoral camps were also vandalised at that time.

“Police had to fire rubber bullets and teargas canisters to quell the clash,” said Char Jabbar Police Station Officer-In-Charge Md Nizam Uddin.

Advocate Abdur Rahman, general secretary of Noakhali district BNP, claimed police detained 16 leaders and activists of the party including the president of district unit Chhatra Dal, the student front of BNP.

Mohammad Shahjahan alleged that the AL men carried out the attack without provocation, leaving 20 of his men injured.

Refuting the allegation, Khayrul Anam Selim, president of Noakhali district Awami League, said BNP men assaulted six of their leaders and activists in Bhuiyarhat and Kanchanbazar area.

He demanded punishment of the attackers.
