A former Chhatra League leader was killed as two Awami League factions clashed during an election rally in Cox's Bazar's Ramu on Tuesday night.
During the rally, Maulana Moktar Ahmed, a former Jamaat man who has recently joined the Awami League, was requested to address the audience and seek vote for “boat”, the AL's electoral symbol, said witnesses.
But Moktar “tactfully” turned down the request, making leaders and activists of an AL faction present there furious. All of a sudden, they attacked Moktar, leading to a clash, the witnesses said, adding that the incident happened around 8:30pm.
At one point, Moktar's supporters swooped on Tajuddin Russel, 29, a former vice president of Ramu Chhatra League, with sticks, leaving him critically injured, they said.
He died on his way to a hospital in Cox's Bazar.
The clash left five others injured.
Abul Mansur, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, said they were investigating the matter. Anyone responsible would be brought to book.
The body was handed over to his family following an autopsy at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
