An Awami League supporter was beaten dead allegedly by BNP men while campaigning in Sylhet Sadar upazila tonight.
BNP local leaders, however, denied the allegation.
The deceased was identified as Koysor Mia, 35, reports our Sylhet correspondent quoting police.
Some BNP men attacked Koysor following an altercation while he was distributing leaflets in support of AL candidate for the Sylhet-1 in Nolkot village around 10:00pm, leaving him critically injured, claimed Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, Sylhet city unit AL president.
Later, Koysor was rushed to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead, he said.
Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, told The Daily Star, that they had heard that a local AL man died in an attack. "We are investigating the matter," he added.
Denying the allegations of the attack, Ali Ahmed, general secretary of Sylhet district unit BNP, said, "It is a conspiracy. The murder took place due to the internal feud in AL camp and now it is being used as a weapon against BNP."
"When the BNP men cannot even conduct their own campaign with safety, how could they attack the AL man," he questioned.
