Two BNP candidates attacked

Jubo League man killed in Chattogram's Patiya

Hours before the nation goes to polls, a Jubo League leader was hacked and beaten to death allegedly by BNP-Jamaat activists in Patiya upazila of Chattogram last night, police said.

Dil Mohammad, 35, was attacked and killed in his neighbourhood in Kushumpur area around 9:15pm, Afruzul Huque Tutul, additional superintendent of police in Chattogram, told The Daily Star.

Police are raiding the area to arrest the attackers, he added.

Doctors at Chattogram Medical College Hospital declared him dead after he was taken there around 9:45pm, said Alauddin, in-charge of the police outpost at the hospital.

Meanwhile, two BNP candidates in Manikganj and Moulvibazar have allegedly been attacked since Friday night.

BNP men in several other districts alleged that they were harassed by police and potential polling agents were arrested.

Motorcades and campaigns of at least 58 candidates, mostly from the BNP, had been attacked, some 1,190 injured and over 950 BNP-Jamaat arrested since the election campaign started on December 10, according to media reports.

Khondaker Akter Hamid Dablu, BNP candidate for Manikganj-1, alleged that armed gangs opened fire on his car twice yesterday -- first near Ghior Upazila Parishad Complex and then in Shivalaya upazila. But they missed his car.

Contacted, Rifat Rahman Shamim, superintendent of police in Manikganj, said police found that the allegation was untrue.

M Naser Rahman, BNP candidate in Moulvibazar-3, was attacked in the town on Friday night around 11:00pm by alleged ruling party men.

Contacted, Fazlur Rahman, joint secretary general of the district Awami League, refuted the allegation.

Sohel Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station, said Naser was attacked by some unidentified young men.

POLICE HARASSMENT

In the eight districts of Rangpur division, at least 116 BNP-Jamaat activists and leaders had been arrested yesterday.

BNP candidates in Cumilla-3 and -10 alleged that at least 50 potential polling agents had been arrested since Thursday.

Police in the district said they only arrested the people accused in cases.

In Pabna, BNP leaders alleged that police had been raiding the homes of potential BNP polling agents.

Rafikul Islam, superintendent of police in the district, said they were raiding to catch suspects.

Shama Obayed Islam, BNP candidate in Faridpur-2, said ruling party activists were asking BNP activists to stay away from the polling stations.

However, Belayet Hossain, general secretary of Nagarkanda upazila AL, refuted the allegation.

In Sherpur, police said they arrested a man for allegedly handing out money among constituents on behalf of a BNP candidate in Sreebordi upazila's Gosaipur union on Friday night.

In Thakurgaon town, a group of BNP men allegedly torched seven motorcycles of AL supporters at Baragaon Chowdhuryhat area.

Contacted, BNP president in the district Taimur Rahman refuted the allegation.
